Feature Request
From KatWiki
I would like to see these features in a desktop search engine:
[edit]
Indexing
- Indexing offline volumes, such as DVDs and CDs (and naming/description of volumes).
- Indexing inside archives (best would be if you could flag an archive if it is to be indexed).
- Indexing compressed postscript files (.ps.gz)
- Indexing of all files (and directories maybe too), not only defined types.
- indexing e-mail - kmail and thunderbird come to mind...
- indexing (and marking the output as) of instant messaging: kopete, gaim, sim
- indexing of the digikam-tags and comments of pictures
- Indexing of audio files with ID3 tags
- Integration with other apps, e.g. amarok for audio or digikam for pictures and interfacing with/integrating their metadata collections
- Beagle has a feature that indexes all HTML files refered to in the FireFox history. This would allow full text search in one's web past experiences.
- Indexing distant directories using kioslaves (for example fish)
See also List of Available Fulltext Plugins.

Other
- Categorization system for files like Wikimedia has, ie. directed acyclic graph.
- Metadata such as comment, original source of document, or if you want to share this file or is it private (for possible future seamless integration with some filesharing app). Maybe the metadata should be divided into general information about the document and how a given user wants to use a document.
- Expressing (in metadata) relations among files, such as "is same as", "is previous version of" and so on.
- Searching for same and similar files.
- User-defined metadata and relations for various file types or groups of files.
- Searching in full filename (including path).
- Encryption of de indexing database - don't think it's neccessary, you can encrypt the underlying filesystem, but it was asked by someone else.
- Shut down Kat via the systray icon, not only via kcontrol.
- show full path of file as a tooltip in the result list of a search when the mouse is over the file for some time
- In search results : add an option "Open File directory" in right clic on a file
- Preview of PDF/PS/etc
- Highlighting of searched word(s) in search results -> item -> show full text
- It would be nice of the 'Wizard' would make uninstalled packages installable, by making the table entries clickable which would fire up kpackage (or whatever comes with KDE/...)
- I would like a way to use Kat from the command line only. This would be useful to make an intranet web search for a Samba or other LAN filesystem.
- Kat Theme Folders
- a clean, simple gui like the actual beagle mockup (http://beagle-project.org/images/4/4e/Searchmockup.png) - with different information for different file types (previews for images, authors for e-mails)
- Support for musical databases like http://musicbrainz.org/ to retrieve metadata for audio files
- Using kat as a kioslave, so we can make search on "open" dialog
- Support for using the search index of web search engines (Google) to find documents (web pages, images, satellite imagery, PDF and MS Word documents, ... ) on the web
- Support for using specific websites for finding news articles in on-line newspaper archives, movies/actors/directors in the Internet Movie Database, offerings on E-Bay, Wikipedia articles, online dictionary entries, etc.
- KIO support to open .kat files as a kat:// virtual filesystem in konquerror.
- Open with kpdf and automatically launch a search inside kpdf such that the term searched inside kat are highlighted in kpdf and we are on the right page. Maybe the dcop interface of kpdf must be extended in this case since I don't see anything else than a "virtual void slotFind() = 0;" in the dcop.h file of kpdf. Maybe it would be feasable if we can convince the guys of kpdf to allow an argument to this dcop call.

When does this get implemented?
